Everything depends on the quality of the receiver or preamp or amplifier.

Basically, a recipient of an amplifier and pre-combined in a single device. Some high-end receivers from Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Yamaha, Pioneer and Sony are very good.

Normally, when you get preprocessor for multi-channel amplifier and the quality you are pretty good. Special amplifiers tend to do a good job on the strengthening of the beneficiary, but the difference is hardly noticeable. Preprocessing may or may not be better than the treatment that can be obtained by a receiver.

The receivers are the hot item in home theater and most of the newer models have all the bells and whistles. Preprocessing they often do not have the HDMI connection. If you have an HDMI connectivity, then you have to pay a premium.

Dollar for dollar, although I have RAV vs. pre / amps close to the $ 2000 - $ 2500 price. If you need more than that amount and pre-amplifier a viable option.
